YUCK!

I'm sick.

Really sick.

The stay in bed except when you are rushing to the bathroom sick.

I will spare you the gory details, but I am miserable!

Except I lost 4 pounds in one day. BUT, I don't recommend
trying this!

This is the first time in 2 days that I have had the energy or
desire to even make it to the computer.

That's when Mr. M&M knows that it must be serious. So,
he has been waiting on me hand and foot! I might have
to milk this a little! ; )

So, nothing lovely or inspiring from me today.

Or, even tomorrow.

My last post disappeared when Blogger took the
day off, and now this!

Pity party for one! Your table is waiting.

It will have to wait.

When I am better, I will try to do a lovely tablescape
on that table!

Until then, go forth and decorate for both of us!

It's About Time

The subject of time has been much on my mind lately.

I was thrilled when I found this buffet at Goodwill a few months
ago for $67. Although she had seen better days, I knew that a
paint job would make her look good as new. I had seen so many
amazing transformations on different blogs and I
felt that I could do the same.

But, once I got her home, I started to feel differently about her. Yes,
she has experienced the wear and tear of time, but so have I. She might
have damage to her veneer, but the essence of her beauty still shines
through. I hope the same is true for me, too.

And so I decided to embrace her age spots and live with her just the
way she is, at least for now.

After all, I wouldn't want my husband to turn me into some surgically
altered Stepford Wife because he could not accept the
effects of age on my face and body!

Once I dressed up my new purchase with some distressed accessories, her
shabbiness seemed appropriate. I'm not sure that I would like the
look as much if she was all new and shiny.

I was reminded of the rooms that Carol Hicks Bolton used to create at
Homestead, her amazing shop in tiny Fredricksburg, TX.

Carol embraced old, time-worn pieces long before it was trendy
and gave them new life through her artistry.

So for now I am embracing the effects of time, both in my
home and on my body.

How rapidly time urges his flight;

sometimes as a relentless, unsparing destroyer;

but oftener as a swift-winged and beautiful angel;

changing, yet not taking away this world's blessings:

making our past sorrows look dim in the distance;

opening many flowers of pleasure on our way,

and gradually ripening our souls for eternity.

WILLIAM CHAMBERS, The Herald of Gospel Liberty, Sep. 22, 1921

Without too many words, here are a few more images from one
of my favorite rooms in our house!

What could emphasize the passage of time more than my baby picture?

This tureen is the only piece shown, other than my baby picture, that was not thrifted.

Everything else came from Goodwill or other local thrift stores.

Nothing cost more than $9.99!

This is one of my absolute favorite possessions.

I love the intricate details.

And I love the play of light and shadow on those details.

Thanks for visiting today. I will share the rest of this room very soon.

Meanwhile, time flies, and so must I, dear bloggers!

Scheduled Post FAIL!

GRRR! Because of my crazy work schedule, I scheduled this post
to go up yesterday for Cinco de Mayo. It never posted. What happened?

Has this ever happened to any of you? So frustrating!

So, a day late and a peso short, here is my Cinco de Mayo post.
Hope somebody had a margarita for me!

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, I decided to feature a home in Mexico that
was originally featured in the July-August 2007 Southern Accents.

When Suzi and Gene Mann first bought a place in San Miguel de Allende,
Mexico, their friends thought they were crazy. After all, Suzi herself
described it as a “total, complete, falling down ruin,” that was most
recently inhabited by bats. Their friends predicted that the renovations
would either kill Suzi and Gene or destroy their marriage. But they were
unfazed by the dire predictions and forged ahead.

The property was surrounded by handsome 200 year old stone and
adobe walls that were 2 feet thick and 20 feet tall. The buildings used
to be warehouses for crops. But Suzi had a vision of what she wanted.

She started with a list of words that reflected how she wanted their
home to feel: spiritual, romantic, sanctuary, old, crumbling, and elegant.

She shooed away the architects who wanted to create a slick
modern feel, and instead oversaw the renovations herself. One of
her biggest challenges was getting the workmen to understand that she
wanted things to look imperfect. This resulted in sometimes having to
scrub away early attempts at perfection and replacing
them with irregular surfaces.

The living room has a more formal and elegant feel than the rest
of the house, yet it is still an interesting juxtaposition of
rustic and refined.

I could spend hours in this kitchen and I don't even cook! I love the
exposed rock, the ornate wrought iron lantern, and
that spectacular range hood!

The master bedroom is the perfect embodiment of the words
that guided Suzi in this process: romantic, spiritual and sanctuary.
The iron bed is amazing, as are the lace curtains that frame it.

The tile work throughout the house is amazing. I wish that there
was a picture of the tiled niche that can just be seen to the left
of the tub! The lovely collection of Talavera urns were
purchased from local potters.

Gene's office is one of my favorite rooms. I tried to put the two
page picture back together again on Picnik but it didn't line up properly
if you look at the doors of that rustic armoire that I am in love with.

The thickness of the walls is evident when you look at the windows
throughout. The interior shutters are functional and much preferable
to a window treatment in this setting.

Look at the old hide draped over the primitive desk. And, being
from Texas originally, I LOVE cowboy boots. What a
great way to feature them!

The central patio embraces you with bougainvillea-covered walls.
I love the arched iron grille over the gate.

The patio would be a favorite place to hang out. The mesquite
wood furniture was custom built by a local carpenter.

I think the Manns' hard work paid off. The results speak for
themselves, with a home that reflects every word on that original
list. I bet those friends that predicted the worst now look forward to
invitations to spend a few days in what truly is an elegant sanctuary.

Hmmm. I wonder if I can get on their guest list, too....

Happy Cinco Seis de Mayo!

Fabulous Finds & Dollar Deals

Something to crow about!

I have been finding some great stuff at the thrift stores lately. People
must be doing some serious spring cleaning!

I had always heard that December was the best month to thrift
because so many people make donations at the end of the year
in order to get the tax write off. I had a manager at a Goodwill store
tell me that they receive so many donations that they have to bring
in an 18 wheeler to load up because they don't have enough
room in the store.

And yet, I am always disappointed in December.

But in the springtime? Ahhh, I am in thrifting heaven!

I thought I would share a few of the things that I
found just last week.

First of all, the shutters in the background were $5.95 for the
pair. They allowed me to shoot these pictures without having to
do the dishes and clean up the kitchen. That alone makes
them priceless in my book!

The lovely orchid was $4.94

I can rarely pass up anything having to do with roosters.
Mr. Rooster was a bargain at $2.92.

I love this big glass jar encased in a rustic willow basket! I envision
being able to use it in dozens of different settings. When you look
closely at the jar itself, it has the word”Peanuts” on it. So appropriate since
we live in Georgia. Our state crop is the peanut, and we produce nearly
50% of the U.S. peanut crop.

I thought it was a bargain at $6.76! Why would someone get rid of this?
(Thank God they did!)

The arrangement inside was one of those that already is prearranged
for you. All you have to do is stick it in a container. My favorite
kind, and it was $1.99.

Check out this lovely lavabo that I found for $7.99. Decorative
only, but that is fine with me!

Check out the face behind the faucet!

Of course, because of my recent obsession with tablescapes, I now
grab purchase anything related to setting a pretty table.

The pink floral applique napkins are new and cost 50 cents each.

But check out the placemats. April Cornell! Brand new with tags!

Let's take a closer look at the tags, shall we? Originally $39, they were
only $4.99 at the thrift store. I ran all the way to the register!

Sometimes thrifting means buying something out of season and putting it
away until the appropriate time of year. Such is the case with these lovely
Pier 1 plates called “Ornament.” Each plate was $1 and I purchased
a set of eight.

At the same Goodwill, I also found some other items to
go with the Pier 1 plates.

The brass chargers were $1.71. each. Although I could polish them, I actually
liked the burnished look that brass has when tarnished. I don't like brass
when it is too bright and shiny, so these will probably stay like this.

These plates are beautifully simple with a lovely gold border. They
were the perfect backdrop but can be used year round. They were
manufactured sometime between 1896 and 1920 by Bawo & Dotter
in Limoges, France. At $1.75 each, I bought all six.

The brass napkin rings were 49 cents each.

This vignette was was featured in a previous post. However, since that post
focused (pun intended) on photography, I didn't share the specifics of the
deals. I thought that I would follow up here.

Large ironstone coffee pot--$5.49
Ironstone platter--$6.96
Compote--$2.49
Larger conch shell--$1.91
Smaller shell--.99
Globe--$5.49
Tan napkins (new)--.49 each

Here's that cute bare butt again. These cherub napkin rings were a favorite
find and irresistible at .75 each!

But the title of this post talks about dollar deals. So, where are they?

I'm about to show you.
I walked into a thrift store that was doing a final clearance on
some items. Anything with a white tag was only $1.

Just to give you an idea of what I looked like that day....

I am in love with blue and white lately. I can't get enough. And I don't
have any blue in my home. (Yet.)

But I can always use it in tablescapes! And if it
only costs a dollar, then it's hard to talk myself out of it.

The oval ironstone platter is perfect in its simplicity. Great here
as a supporting player.

$1

The real star is the duck casserole.

Such an impertinent face!

$1

What you can't see in the first picture is that the third piece
is actually a compote.

$1

But, I saved my favorite dollar deal for last...

A punch bowl with 12 cups!

I'll be honest with you. I don't drink punch.

Nor have I ever had the need for a punch bowl with 12 cups. But, someday,
my daughter will get married. When that day comes, and it had better not
be anytime soon, I will be armed and ready with a punch bowl for a shower!

Because I've got one now. It has a pretty fleur de lis design.
And, it was originally $17.99.

$1!

Can you believe it?

And people say a dollar doesn't buy much anymore.

They're just not shopping in the right places!
